Current Status of Massage Therapy Regulation

In Alberta, the Transitional Council for the College of Massage Therapists of Alberta (TC-CMTA) is preparing the documents for the rules under which registered massage therapists will be required to practice.

The NHPC supports regulation and is working with the TC-CMTA, the government, and the following member associations to make this happen:

  • Canadian massage and Manual Osteopathic Therapists Association (CMMOTA)
  • Massage Therapists Association of Alberta (MTAA)
  • Certified Registered Massage Therapists of Albert (CRMTA)

2021 Activity

When new COVID-19 restrictions were introduced by the Provincial Health Minister in December 2020, the TC-CMTA and the three Alberta associations worked with the Minister to demonstrate their willingness to cooperate by sharing and combining protocols for safe practice.

Over the December holiday break, association decision-makers developed a superior safety protocol the government was willing to trust.

The TC-CMTA realized that the collaborative working model used above was successful; it will use it moving forward to keep decision makers engaged.

The TC-CMTA and the three association have formed a Working Group. Participants are working together using recommendations made by senior Government Health Department staff.
